About this place
A flight of stairs down into a building basement just off Nakano-dori brings you to Tamagawa, a neighborhood izakaya arranged with a long counter and table seating. The spacious counter makes it easy to settle in for a drink on your own, while traditional tatami seating further back readily accommodates groups.
Affordably priced fish dishes anchor the kitchen's offerings. Alongside assorted sashimi platters, raw specialties such as surf clam, sweet prawn, and whale sashimi share the menu with classic drinking companions, from aromatic grilled yellowtail collar to sablefish simmered in a sweet-savory sauce. The lineup reaches well beyond standard Japanese staples with an eclectic spread of small dishes, including crisp white fish and cheese spring rolls, prawn gratin, seasoned ginger pork, and pork jowl stir-fried with garlic and potatoes.
After snacking on small plates alongside pours of beer or shochu, diners can round off the meal with satisfying staples such as tendon, yakisoba, chilled udon, or onigiri and ochazuke with selectable toppings. Tamagawa is open from 17:00 in the evening until 0:00 late at night every day except Tuesday. Payment is cash only.
